For over 80 years, 35 Below® has been dedicated to keeping feet warm and comfortable no matter the weather. Our story begins in 1936 when our founder, Henry Jones, moved from the warm climate of Florida to the icy winters of Minnesota. Henry quickly learned that his thin cotton socks were no match for the below freezing temperatures. After getting frostbite on his toes one winter, Henry decided there must be a better way.
He began experimenting with different fabrics and designs until he created the perfect cold weather sock – one that kept feet warm and dry even in frigid conditions. Henry called his creation “Thermal Socks”. The socks were an instant hit with Minnesotans who were used to braving harsh winters. News of Henry’s invention spread and soon people from all over the northern US were seeking out his thermal socks.
In 1939, Henry officially launched the 35 Below® brand. The name was inspired by the record low temperature in Minnesota of -35°F. Henry knew his socks could stand up to the coldest conditions nature could throw at them. The 35 Below® thermal sock became a Minnesota staple throughout the 1940s and 50s.
Growth and Innovation
Over the years, the 35 Below® brand has grown tremendously but remains dedicated to Henry’s vision of creating the warmest, most comfortable socks on the market. In the 1960s we pioneered the use of Merino wool in our socks which allowed for unmatched softness and temperature regulation.
In the 1980s, the creation of our Thermalite® fabric blended the warmth of wool with the lightweight durability of polyester and nylon. This innovative fabric ensured feet stayed dry and comfortable all day long. The 1990s saw the launch of our Thermacushion® technology which incorporated extra cushioning in high impact zones like the heel and toe. This provided unprecedented comfort and support.
Product Expansion
While thermal socks remain the heart of our business, over the years 35 Below® has expanded into other product categories while maintaining our focus on warmth and comfort. In the new millennium, we introduced a line of winter gloves and hats to keep hands and heads just as warm as feet.
Our customers also encouraged us to take our sock expertise and apply it to products for warmer weather. This led to the launch of our Coolmax® and Airy Feet® lines of lightweight, breathable socks perfect for athletic activities and hot summer days.
